On Wednesday We Play Volleyball: RBVL Week 4

By Devin Gavigan

Week Four is already here for the Rockaway Beach Volleyball league. Riis Park beach was packed as usual on Wednesday evening. The parking lot filled with cars, the boardwalk lined up with bicycles, and the open concessions were being taken advantage of throughout the matches. People came from every direction with children, coolers, volleyballs, chairs, and more. Teams warmed and set up their courts quickly, determined to do even better than last week.

The weather kept the players comfortable whilst playing in the nice 72 degrees, but they did have to become more conscience of ball placement and direction due to the windy beach. A few dark clouds moved in slow and rain began to lightly fall nearing the conclusion of the matches. Teams did, however, seem to keep good ball control during their sets and did not let the wind or rain interfere in their game.

The Divisions did not have much change this week. The team standings in all 10 divisions- Ocean, Ocean Breeze, Wave, Beach, Beach Breeze, Boardwalk, Sun, Sunray, Moon, and Star- interestingly remained stagnant this week. The lack of change keeps Kobeyaki Got Kills, The Might Crom, Notorious DIGs, The Melons, Bungalow Baranhas, Your Name Could Be Here, Star Wars Cantina, Its 5 O’Clock Somewhere, Last Call, and Serves Em Right all in the lead of their Divisions. Yet, some divisions do have a number of ties for first and second place. In Division Ocean, Deirdre Maeve’s Freaky Tiki All Stars and Bungalow Bar & Restaurants are tied for second, as well as Sun Ray with ServPro NW Brooklyn and Relmax/Elite Net Results, and Moon’s division team’s Last Call and DysFUNctional are tied for first, with Wave division’s Notorious DIGs and Kiss My Ace as well. Star Division Has Harbor Light Sandhogs, Odd Couples, and EZ Company all tied for second place.

The weeks are moving quickly and week five will be here before you know it. Next week’s volleyball weather is looking sunny and warm.  The standings in all divisions are very close; it will be interesting to see what the turnout will be in the weeks to follow. Look on the volleyball website, rbvl.com, for updates, additional photos, contact information, schedules, and more.
