The Show Must Go On

by Devin Gavigan

Beach chairs and volleyball nets were placed on the Riis Park sand once again on Wednesday at 6:30 p. m. with the second week of the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League. The crowd appeared even larger than the previous week, with more supporters and more rows of matches on the humid 71 degree day.

Initially, the weather was worrisome with rain earlier in the day. Luckily, the rain ended and the overcast sky did not cause trouble. People began warming up and  preparing for their volleyball matches. The sun eventually began to peak through the clouds to warm up the sand and players.

The teams kept track of their own games this week, and there were a large amount of great and competitive matches. Each match seemed to have many good plays made throughout the sets, with players from both sides making some quick and well-played dives, blocks, hits, serves, and digs from off the net and around the sand. Ocean division gained Kobeyaki Got Kills as the new team at number one, dropping Bungalow Bar & Restaurant to third. The Might Crom kept their number one title in Ocean Breeze, but PICO went up several places as the new fourth place team. The Wave Division’s number one also remained for another week with the Notorious DIGs, and last week’s sixth team Kiss My Ace went up to take second. Beach, Sun Ray, and Moon Divisions also faced a change in the number one team rank. Beach Breeze, Sun, and Star Divisions’ number one teams stayed at the top, like Ocean Breeze and The Wave.

As the games slowly came to an end, people took down the nets, and folded up their beach chairs to head back home. Written on the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League website, RBVL.com, the volleyball players were all invited to Roger’s Pub on Beach 116th Street.

The RBVL Committee wants to, “thank all the players for their support and cooperation tonight. All future updates will be posted on Facebook and RBVL.com.”
